Mumbai: India’s Seema Kaliramna reached another milestone in her athletics career after winning the bronze medal in the women’s discus throw at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The podium finish gave the PhD scholar her first Commonwealth Games medal and added another success story to India’s campaign.

In a video released by IIS before the Games, Kaliramna spoke about the people who helped her stay focused on athletics. One memory stood out. She revealed that she resumed training the very next day after her marriage, encouraged by her husband, who is also her coach.
“The next day after marriage, my husband told me it was time to get back to practice,” she recalled. “That was always the plan. We both wanted me to continue competing.”
Fighting back after injury
Kaliramna also reflected on one of the toughest phases of her career. Returning after injury was not easy, and rebuilding her confidence took time. She admitted that the early days of training tested her patience more than anything else.
“When I picked up the discus again, it travelled only 30 metres,” she said. “I knew I had a long way to go, but I never thought of giving up.”
Family stood firmly behind her
Her husband said there was never any doubt that Kaliramna would continue competing after marriage. Despite questions from people around them, the family remained committed to her sporting career and supported her ambitions without hesitation.
“Many people felt she should stop playing after marriage,” he said. “I believed she still had a lot to achieve. We decided she would continue chasing her dreams.”
