Wawrinka to meet Vasselin in Chennai Open final

Stanislas-Wawrinka-2Chennai: World No. 8 Stanislas Wawrinka will meet Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the final of Chennai Open on Sunday.

Wawrinka and Roger-Vasselin are tied at 1-1 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series. Roger-Vasselin beat Wawrinka in October 2013 at the Swiss Indoors Basel, while the Swiss won in Chennai two years ago.

Top seed Wawrinka, who lifted the 2011 trophy, was leading Vasek Pospisil 6-4, 5-5 on Saturday when the fifth seed retired due to a back injury after one hour and 51 minutes of play.


Roger-Vasselin will be bidding to capture his first ATP World Tour singles trophy.

The seventh seed defeated sixth seed Marcel Granollers of Spain 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in just over two hours for a place in his second championship match.


On Friday, Wawrinka recorded the 300th match win of his career with victory over Aljaz Bedene. He became just the fourth Swiss player to reach the landmark after Roger Federer (926), Marc Rosset (433) and Jakob Hlasek (432).

Croats Reach Doubles Final

Marin Draganja and Mate Pavic defeated last year’s doubles finalists, third-seeded Germans Andre Begemann and Martin Emmrich 7-6(5), 6-4. They challenge fourth seeds Johan Brunstrom and Frederik Nielsen for the title.
