Chennai: Top seed Stanislas Wawrinka got the better off Edouard Roger-Vasselin 7-5, 6-2 to win his second Aircel Chennai Open title here on Sunday. In his career match No. 500 for Wawrinka beat his rival with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Edouard Roger-Vasselin in 95 minutesto win the title.
Wawrinka joins Carlos Moya (2004, ‘05) and Marin Cilic (2009, ‘10) as the only players with multiple Chennai crowns. He defeated Xavier Malisse 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 for the title as the No. 3 seed in 2011 and was the runner-up the year prior, falling in two tie-breaks to Cilic.
Wawrinka avenged a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Roger-Vasselin at the Swiss Indoors Basel late last year.
Both players were efficient on serve in the early stages, with Roger-Vasselin saving four break points in the third game of the first set. They would remain on serve until 5-5, when the 30 year old pushed a backhand approach wide to relinquish a crucial break. Wawrinka would hold to love in the next game, sealing the set with an ace and proceeding to reel off five straight games. He would run away with the second set 6-2, clinching the victory in just over an hour and a half.
The World No. 8 earns $72,490 in prize money and 250 points and with the victory, further solidifying himself in the Top 10 of the Emirates ATP Rankings. Roger-Vasselin claims 150 points and $38,180 for his run to the final. The Frenchman will ascend 12 spots to a career-high World No. 40.
