Devvarman one match away to qualify in US Open

somdev101New York: Somdev Devvarman is just a match away from making it to the main draw of the US Open which will start from August 26.  On Thursday, he ousted American Robby Ginepri by 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 in the second round of the qualifiers here. He will now take on Britain’s James Ward in his final qualifying match on Friday.

World No.113, Devvarman managed to oust the 2005 US Open semi-finalist, Ginepri in over two hours. Devvarman didn’t have as many winners as the American, but it was his less number of unforced errors which gave him the advantage.

Devvarman served eight aces against Ginepri’s five, even while the American had the upper hand in hitting winners - 42 against 27. Eventually, 44 unforced errors from the World no.252 won him the match.

Devvarman, whose best performance at Flushing Meadows during the past four appearances has been reaching the second round, plays Britain’s James Ward in his final qualifying match on Friday.
