Port of Spain, Trinidad: Virat Kohli played a captain's knock of 102 off 83 balls to help India beat West Indies by a massive 102 runs and earn a bonus point to keep their hope alive in the Tri-nation series here on Friday.
Batting first, India were off to a good start as the opening pair of Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma added 123 runs for the first wicket before Dhawan was caught by Bravo off Kemar Roach for 69.
Dhawan played some fantastic strokes as India reached 39 in the first 10 overs. Sharma too started timing the the ball well and the duo soon took India to 123 in 23 overs before Kemar Roach gave hosts the breakthrough in the first over of his second spell. Sharma followed his opening partner soon into the dressing room as he edged Tino Best and Denesh Ramdin made no mistake behind the stumps.
Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthik too failed with the bat and India was soon stuggling at 168-4 in the 36th over after a good start.
But Kohli found an able partner in Murali Vijay who went on to make 42 off 28 balls and revived India's innings with his skipper. But after he departed followed by a run out of Ravindra Jadeja, India were again on back-foot at 222-6 with eight overs remaining.
But Kohli, who got to fifty off 55 balls, changed his gears and raced to his 14th one-day ton in the final over, off 81 balls. He found an able ally in Ravichandran Ashwin, who hit an unbeaten 25 of 18 balls with three fours. India finished their innings at 311-7 off 50 overs.
Chasing 312 to win, West Indies were off to a bad start as they lost Chris Gayle and Darren Bravo inside the first five overs. Thereafter, they never got the necessary momentum and the team was bowled out for 171 off 34 overs to lose by 102 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method.
