Istanbul (Turkey): Led by International Master Tania Sachdev, Indian women’s team registered a comprehensive 3.5-0.5 victory over Israel in the 10th round of the Chess Olympiad here.
The win came as a much needed respite for the Indian eves after their loss to Russia in the previous round. They are now on the joint fourth position with a round in hand.
This is the first time they have come so close to a podium finish and will take on Ukraine their likely opponent in the next round.
Tania, Soumya Swaminathan and D Harika won for India whereas Mary Ann Gomes was held to a draw.
Meanwhile in the men’s round, they had yet another disappointing day at the office could only manage a 2-2 draw with Cuba after looking good for a victory for the major part of the match.
Grandmasters Abhijeet Gupta and Parimajan Negi won for India on the third and fourth board while K Sasikiran and P Harikrishna lost against their respective opponents.
