London: India’s Somdev Devvarman campaign at the 2012 London Olympics came to an end after he suffered a straight set defeat to the sixth seeded Jarrko Nieminen in the rain affected first round matchup of the men’s singles event.
Somdev, a wild card entrant and ranked 418 in the World lost to 3-6, 1-6 to his rival from Finland.
Somdev making a comeback to the competitive grid almost after seven months due to a shoulder injury committed was no match for his higher ranked opponent and committed 21 unforced errors.
The Indian started well but then his service in the first set let him down as he lost the first set in 37 minutes. There was an intervention by the rain which looked like it would affect 41st ranked Finnish player’s tempo but then he looked even more dangerous in the second set and wrapped it up in no time. He broke Somdev twice in the second set.
Today India will see another player competing in the men's singles event with Vishnu Vardhan taking on Slovakia's Blaz Kavcic.
Vardhan made the draw after Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber withdrew after a hamstring injury and was supposed to play yesterday but his match got postponed due to rain.
