New Delhi: Indian boxing team will be awarded cash prizes if they win medals at the upcoming London Olympics, announced Sandeep Jajodia, chairman Monnet Group who are the sponsor of Indian Boxing Federation. Boxer who will win a gold medal will be awarded Rs 51 lakh, silver and bronze medal will fetch Rs. 21 lakh and Rs 11 lakh respectively.
The awards were announced at the send-off function organised for the eight qualified boxers. L Devendro Singh (49kg), Shiva Thapa (56kg), Jai Bhagwan (60kg), Manoj Kumar (64kg), Vikas Krishan (69kg), Vijender Singh (75kg) and Sumit Sangwan (81kg) and M C Mary Kom (51kg) are the boxers who will represent India in London.
Vijender Singh who was present at the event said that he will try to better his Beijing performance and will strive for gold this time. On the pressure he has on him he said that now the younger boxers have shared the pressure with him and he is fairly relaxed.
Five time world champion and the lone Indian women boxer to have qualified for the Olympics, MC Mary Kom said, “I am confident going into the tournament and will give it my best shot. I will try my best to win a gold medal for India in the London Olympics and the rest is upto the God.”
Young sensation Devendro said that he is very happy going into the Olympics and is confident of winning a gold medal.
Chief national coach, GS Sandhu who was also present at the event said that the team is looking good and he has high hopes from his team.
“The spirit is high in the camp and things are shaping up quite well. I have always said that to maintain an achievement is difficult, in the last Olympics it did not look that we have any chance, but we got a bronze, all the boys have been performing well and we will definitely look to better our performance from the last time”, said Sandhu
