Guangzhou: India's Subhajit Saha and Divya Deshpande moved into the second stage of the Asia Cup Table Tennis meet here, causing upsets Saturday.
On a hectic day, the Indians played seven matches winning three and losing four. But what stood out on the day was the major upset by Subhajit Saha, ranked 259 in the world, who defeated world No.18 Jiang Tian Yi of Hong Kong 3-2. It was a well fought match where fortunes fluctuated from one extreme to another, but Saha held on gamely to outwit his opponent.
Similarly, unranked Divya toppled world No.123 Beh Lee Wei of Malaysia 3-1 to top the Challenger group. In fact, Divya's match proved to be one-sided with the Malaysian girl finding it difficult to handle Divya's crisp shots.
Both Saha and Divya will now play their matches for positions 9 to 16, slated for Sunday. (IANS)
