Baroda defeat Karnataka in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

yusuf pathanMumbai: A rampage by Yusuf Pathan in the Super Over helped Baroda beat Karnataka in the pre quarters of the all-India T20 tournament for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, played here at the Cricket Club of India, here on Friday.

After the teams were tied for 167, the match proceeded into super over to decide the winner. It was all Yusuf in the over who hit two huge sixes and two fours off Abhimanyu Mithun’s. The over costed 22 runs. In reply, Robin Uthappa and Bharat Chipli could just manage seven runs in the over bowled by Murtuza Vahora.

Vahora scored 45 (21b, 6x4, 2x6) to pilot Baroda's chase. Pathan had lasted 11 balls for nine runs and then watched as his teammate turned the match around from 119 for eight to 167, aided by some clean hitting by top-scorer Aditya Waghmode (52, 33b, 8x4) to bring the score to level.

Bharat Chipli who anchored the Karnataka innings with 43-ball 60 with a six and 10 fours made a blunder when his fumble allowed Baroda to take an extra run and make it to the super over.

Coming into bowl, Mithun was smashed all over and conceded 22 in the last over with Pathan scoring 21 out of it. Baroda then used Vahora to bowl the return over and he did the job well restricting the Karnataka pair of skipper Robin Uthappa and Chipli.

Brief scores: Karnataka 167 for 6 in 20 overs (R Uthappa 21, B Chipli 60, S Binny 35; B Bhatt 2 for 39, A Karambelkar 3 for 31). Baroda 167 for 9 in 20 overs (A Waghmode 50, M Vahora 45 not out).
