Charleston: Former World number one Venus Williams defeated another World number one Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 7-5, 6-0 on Wednesday to reach the third round of the Charleston tournament.

After enjoying an upper hand for most part of the first set Jankovic was broken by the American at 5-4 and after could not force way into the match.

In other match, Russian Nadia Petrova registered 2-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-2 victory over US Jill Craybas, while sixth seeded German Sabine Lisicki defeated Andrea Hlavackova of Czechoslovakia 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
