Sony Ericsson Open: Sharapova advances, Serena Bows out

Miami: Maria Sharapova moved into the last 8 while former world number one Serena Williams crashed out of the Sony Ericsson Open played here on Wednesday.

Maria Sharapova of China, a former champion at the Miami defeated Li Na of China 6-3, 6-0 to ease into the semis. Li ranked World number eight just could not do justice to her reputation and made more than 40 unforced errors and had only four winners.

Meanwhile, Serena Williams’ playing her first tournament since last year’s Australian Open due to an injury layoff was beaten by another former World number one Caroline Wozniacki. Serena attempting to win the title a record sixth time lost 6-4, 6-4.

Williams delivered more winners than Wozniacki but the amount of unforced errors she committed was the cause for her ouster. She hit 34 winners as compared to 12 for Wozniacki, while committing 36 unforced errors to Wozniacki’s 13.
