Miami: American wild card entrant Ryan Harrison defeated Italian Potito Starace 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-4 to make it to the second round of the Sony Ericsson Open played here on Thursday.

Harrison would now meet former champion Roger Federer of Switzerland. The American completed the match in two hours and 23 minutes hit 11 aces and won 74% of his first serve.

In other matches played, Marcos Baghdatis of Cypriot defeated Leonardo Mayer of Argentina 6-1, 6-4 in a match 20 minutes more than an hour. He converted four of his six break points.

Meanwhile Ivo Karlovic of Croatia defeated Poland's Lukasz Kubot 6-3, 6-7(2), 7-6(2) in three hours and three minutes and Russian Igor Kunitsyn beat American wild card Jesse Levine 7-6(8), 7-6(3) in two hours and 16 minutes.
