Melbourne:Sania Mirza lost to Bulgaria's Tsetana Pironkova 4-6, 2-6 in the first round of Australian Open here on Monday. Sania Mirza, who made a comeback from a knee injury and was playing her second singles match in five months, looked to put up some fight but that was not enough as she went down to her Bulgarian counterpart in straight sets.
With Somdev Devvarman pulling out of the tournament due to an injury, Sania was India’s only hope at the single event, showed some resiliency but made 20 unforced errors as compared to 14 by Pironkova making her lose the first set.
After going down in the first set, Sania started off positively in the second set, but she eventually went down 4-2 in the second set.
After going down 4-2 she made a desperate attempt to comeback but could not shake the 47th ranked Bulgarian Pironkova who won the game to make it 5-2. It was impossible for her to make a comeback from there and some powerful serves in the eight game of the match saw Sania bowing out of the Championship.
