Wawrinka beats Coric to win his fourth Chennai Open title and third in a row

Stanislas Wawrinka 26Chennai: For Stan Wawrinka, it has become a habit to kick off his season with a win as the Swiss once again went on to win the Chennai Open title, his third in a row and fourth overall, when he beat 19-year-old Borna Coric 6-3, 7-5 in the final of the Aircel Chennai Open on Sunday.

The World No. 4 will take home $75,700 in prize money and 250 Emirates ATP Rankings points. The 30-year-old won his 12th tour-level crown overall and eighth on hard courts. Wawrinka asserted his supremacy over Coric, winning the third clash against him and extended his Chennai winning streak to 12 matches and 24 sets.

Wawrinka converted his first break point in the sixth game of the first set, taking a 4-2 lead. Coric pressed for an immediate break back, however, the World No. 4 Swiss eventually closed out the opener after 40 minutes, striking 17 winners.

The second set was a thriller as both remained on serve until the 11th game, when Wawrinka took the decisive break and seal the victory after one hour and 27 minutes a game later.

Meanwhile, Oliver Marach and Fabrice Martin defeated Austin Krajicek and Benoit Paire 6-3, 7-5 to win the Chennai Open doubles title. The third seeds will share 250 Emirates ATP Doubles Rankings points and $23,000.
