Chennai: Croatian qualifier Ante Pavic got the better of Nicolas Almagro of Spain3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (1), registering the biggest win of his career on Day 1 of the Chennai Open, here on Monday.

In other matches, Borna Coric defeated Marcel Granollers7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-4, while John Millman of Australia rallied for a 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-6 (6) win over Evgeny Donskoy of Russia.

Meanwhile in the doubles match, Mahesh Bhupathi and Gilles Muller of Luxembourg lost to Raveen Klaasen (Russia) and Rajeev Ram (USA) 3-6, 7-6 (7) and 7-10. With both pairs registering a set win each, the match went to a thrilling super tie-break. However, Klaasen and Ram prevailed won the tie-break 7-10.
