New York: India’s Sania Mirza along with her Swiss partner Martina Hingis battled past Chan Yung-Jan and Chan Hao-Ching to reach the women’s doubles semi-finals of the US Open on Tuesday.
Down 0-5 in the opening set, the reigning Wimbledon champions captured 13 of the next 15 games to earn a 7-6(5), 6-1 win.
The No.1 doubles team had split their last two meetings with No.9 Chan sisters. Meanwhile, Hingis is hoping to reach a second straight US Open final and her first with Mirza.
Hingis and Mirza will now meet all-Italian No.11 seeds, Sara Errani and Flavia Pennetta, who battled back from a second set lull to outfox the No.15 seeded team of WTA Rising Star Lara Arruabarrena and Andreja Klepac, 6-0, 5-7, 6-2. Errani won the US Open in 2012 with Roberta Vinci, while Pennetta reached the final with Hingis last year - beating Mirza in the semifinals. Hingis is all too aware of the role reversal.
