Bopanna-Mergea move into US Open men’s doubles quarterfinals

Bopanna22New York: India’s Rohan Bopanna along with his Romanian partner Florin Mergea moved into the quarter-finals of the US Open by beating ninth seeds Daniel Nestor and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-3 on Monday. 

The Indian-Romanian pair took the two hours and six minutes to win the match. In the next round, the duo will take on the unseeded team of Dominic Inglot and Robert Lindstedt. 

Meanwhile, Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau defeated Eric Butorac and Scott Lipsky 7-6(3), 7-5 in 90 minutes to reach the final eight. They will face Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut for a semi-final berth.


Fourth seeds Marcin Matkowski and Nenad Zimonjic defeated Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram 6-3, 7-6(4) to set up a quarter-final meeting with 2015 Wimbledon finalists Jamie Murray and John Peers. Meanwhile, Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey won an All-American battle 6-2, 6-4 over Michael Russell and Donald Young, who lost his fourth-round singles match against Stan Wawrinka earlier in the afternoon.
