US Open: Paes-Verdasco lose in second round to Johnson-Querrey

paesNew York: India’s Leander Paes and Fernando Verdasco lost their second round match 5-7, 6-4, 3-6 to unseeded American pair Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey at the US Open on Friday.



Johnson and Querrey, who ousted top seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan on Wednesday, defeated the Indian-Spanish team in 2 hours and 2 minutes.

Meanwhile, Third seeds Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau, began their campaign for a second consecutive major with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Andre Begemann and Oliver Marach on Friday. They’ll next face the Czech pair of Frantisek Cermak and Jiri Vesely, who defeated Hyeon Chung and Mikhail Kukushkin 6-3, 7-5.

Seventh seeds Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez got the better of Robin Haase and Julien Knowle 6-3, 6-2 in 1 hour and 11 minutes to set up a second-round meeting against Lucas Pouille and Sergiy Stakhovsky.

Meanwhile, Australian Lleyton Hewitt kept his dream alive in his last US Open, teaming up with wsSam Groth to defeat Henri Kontinen and Horacio Zeballos 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
