New Delhi: After the record-breaking success of the inaugural edition of the (PWL), the stage is set for the even bigger 2nd edition of the league from January 2. Last year’s finalists Mumbai and Haryana will play the inaugural match.
When these giants faced each other last time in KD Jadhav hall, they were greeted by a venue brimming with supporters inside as well as standing outside the venue.
The organisers are hoping for a similar response as the first match will be played at the same venue.
In the previous edition, Mumbai had got the better of Haryana on both occasions. During the league stage, the defending champs beat Haryana 4-3 and had laid their hands on the glittering trophy by dominating the same team 7-2 in the final.
Even this time, Mumbai Maharathi is quite strong with three Olympic and World Champion medalists in their line up. Rio Olympics gold winner Erica Wiebe of Canada in 75kg will be the biggest strength for Mumbai while Jabrayil Hasanov of Azerbaijan (74kg) is World Championship silver medalist along with bronze winner Pablo Olenik. They also have roped in Carolina, who missed Rio Olympics bronze medal by narrow margin.
Among Indians, Rahul Aware will spearhead the challenge. His performance against Haryana’s Sandeep Tomar has been quite impressive. In the 65kg, Mumbai have high hopes from Vikas, who had given a good fight to Yogeshwar Dutt in the previous edition.
On the other hand, Haryana Hammers will be relying on their strong squad consisting of World Champion Magomed Kurbanaliev (70kg) of Russia, Rio bronze medalists Sofia Mattsson (53kg) and Marwa Amri of Tunisia (58kg). Among Indians, the runners up have high hopes from Asian Champion Sandeep Tomar. In 65kg, Rajneesh has ability to turn the tables.
In the 97kg category, a high-profile match can be expected between World Championship silver medalists Abdusalom Gadisov and bronze winner Pablo Olenik.
With both teams looking strong, toss and blocking of players will play a crucial role in this tie, said Mumbai’s mentor Ramphal Mann and Jagminder of Haryana.
“Our team is well-balanced. Under the leadership of Erica Wiebe, all players are eager to give their best,” said Mumbai coach Anil Mann.
While Haryana coach Narendra said, “With the inclusion of four top wrestlers, we are expecting to better our last year's performance this time.”
