Rio de Janeiro: India's biggest medal hope Jitu Rai finished eighth in the 10m air pistol final as all the shooters in fray on Day 1 drew a blank in the pistol events. Jitu shot 580, a poor score by his standard, to be ranked sixth in qualification round. He finished eighth in the final round.
After Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna failed to impress in the men’s doubles and crashed out in the first round, Sania Mirza's campaign in the women's event too ended as she and her partner Prarthana Thombare lost their first round match against the Chinese pair of Shuai Zhang and Shuai Peng 7-6 (8-6) 5-7 7-5.
India beat Ireland 3-2 in their opening hockey match. It was a victory eleven years, eleven months and twenty days in the making. India started their hockey tournament in Rio with a tough fought 3-2 victory over Ireland today, their first in the Olympic Games since 2004. Rupinderpal Singh scored a brace, while VR Raghunath scored a goal.
Meanwhile, India’ sole rower, Dattu Bhokanal, gave his country something to cheer about as he finished third and progressed into the quarterfinals of men’s single sculls event. Bhokanal finished the 2000m race with a timing of 7:21.67s behind Angel Fournier Rodriguez, who clocked 7:06.89s and Mexico’s Juan Carlos Cabrera, clocking 7:08.27s.
Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu though had an outside chance to get India a medal, she failed miserably after no lift in the clean and jerk event of the competition.
