Speedo backs young swimmers on their maiden sea-swim expedition

Mumbai: In a bid towards encouraging and supporting young children and their love for the open waters, world's leading swimwear brand- Speedo has decided to support four young children from the city who will venture into the sea, swimming a stretch of 25.7 kilometres, from Vashi Jetty to the Gateway of India on Saturday February 8, 2014. Speedo will extend their support and encourage the young swimmers in the age-group of 10 to 15 years in their expedition towards accomplishing such a terrific feat. Speedo will provide these young swimmers swimwear and other swim-aids to ensure that they make a mark for themselves on the global swimming arena while successfully conquering the open waters at such a young age.

The four swimmers- Tanuja Barve (14), Aditya Bharadwaj, (15), Atharwa Mohite (11) and Nachiket Waghmare (10), who have to their credit, multiple accolades across Zonal competitions, will dive in from the Vashi Jetty and will swim across to The Gateway of India. After having undergone extensive training, this sea-swim expedition will test the swimmers on the basis of their endurance, skill and timing.

After having trained the swimmers to embark on this swim venture, veteran swimmer Santosh Patil said "These children have spent a long time dedicating themselves to this mammoth task, all in the hope to conquer the vast greatness of the open waters. They need all the encouragement they can garner to go that extra mile and we are grateful to the communities around us that have extended their support. We are also thankful to the Team at Speedo for their encouragement and hope these young swimmers perform well in their first attempt at sea-swimming." Santosh Patil has been training the four swimmers along with accomplished swimming coach Sanket Sawant for the event.

Marketing Head of Speedo India, Dominic Vijay concluded, "As an organization that believes in promoting and encouraging swimming at all levels, it is indeed a privilege for us to be supporting these young swimmers as they get set to swim into the sea across a stretch of 25.7 kilometres- a distance longer than a half-marathon. Setting out to achieve this itself requires a lot of determination and we at Speedo always look forward to supporting such strong resolutions. We are very excited and we wish them all the best!"

The swimmers will dive-in from the Vashi Jetty at 5 am on Saturday and will look to finish the stretch in 4 hours depending on the tides.
