Bangalore: Bangalore put its best foot forward, when in excess of 22,000 participants ran together in the TCS World 10K Bangalore on May 19, 2013. These participants also showed that their hearts were in the right pace, when they collectively helped generate Rs 3.70 crores for charity using the event as a platform.
This figure was an increase of Rs 65 lakhs over the monies raised in 2012 and vindicates the commitment and confidence of Charity Partner Bangalore cares and event promoters Procam International in reaping optimum benefits for charity from this unique platform.
These figures were released at a gala function held at the ITC Bengaluru on Thursday by Murray Culshaw, Founder Chairman, Bangalore Cares, the official charity partner, in the presence of Dr. Somashekhar, Managing Director, Small Scale Industries, Govt. of Karnataka, Mr. Nagaraj Ijari, Vice President & Global Head of Hi-tech Vertical, Tata Consultancy Services, Dr. Vivek Jawali of Fortis Hospitals and DiliP Jayram, CEO, Procam International.
In a healthy indication that Bangalore has a strong giving side, the amounts raised for charity through the World’s Premier 10K Run had increased from Rs 41.35 lacs in the first year, to Rs 1.31 crores in the second year, Rs 1.41 crores in 2010, Rs 1.83 crores in 2011 and Rs 3.06 crores in 2012. According to the latest figures received Bangalore cares, the figure for 2013 stands at Rs 3.71 crores in clearly tracked figures.
The NGO Reaching Hand benefited the most from its well wishers, with all the individuals who emerged the highest collectors of money for charity, affiliated to it.
Mr. G Manohar Row, emerged the highest pledge raiser among men from the Care Champions, raising Rs 12.99 lacs, in support of “AKK”-Anga Karunya Kendra, while Devikala M. L. was the top pledge raiser among Care Champion women, collecting Rs 18.28 lacs, in support of The Association of People with Disability. Durgesh J. emerged the highest pledge raiser in the iCare category, raising Rs 3.70 lacs for The Association of People with Disability.
KPMG led the way among corporates, raising Rs 7.25 lacs to emerge the highest pledge raising company, while among the NGOs it was the Reaching Hand with Rs 43.37 lacs, followed by The Association for People with Disability at Rs 41.84 lacs and Pro Vision Asia at Rs 35.08 lacs.
The increase in the amounts raised for charity through the TCS World 10K Bangalore 2013 as compared to the last edition can be put in perspective with a comparison between some of the key figures.
9052 people pledged money this year as compared to 6902 in 2012, benefiting 81 NGOs as compared to 66. The total amount generated was in excess of Rs 3.70 crores as compared to Rs 3.06 crores in 2012. The highest individual pledge raiser from among Care Champions raised Rs 18.28 lacs this year as compared to Rs 15.82 lacs in 2012. Mr. Amarnath Kamath remained the highest fund raising iCare runner, raising Rs 11.55 lacs as compared to Rs 7.85 lacs in the last edition. Reaching Hand improved on their performance this year, raising whopping Rs 43.37 lacs as compared to Rs 3 lacs in 2012.
With Ten editions of the Mumbai Marathon, Eight editions of the Delhi Half Marathon, Six editions of the World 10K Bangalore and one edition of the Hyderabad 10K Run conducted successfully, distance running as a movement is generating momentum at an astronomical rate. Besides propagating the ideals of helping develop a sports culture, health, fitness, and a clean life, these events also promote positive social attributes.
