Mumbai: In an event like never before, some of India’s best kite surfers came together to showcase their talent at sea and sky with a brilliant show of unique kite-surfing techniques at Red Bull Quila surf in Mandwa and Murud-Janjira.
Out of 109 applicants, 40 kitesurfers were selected to participate on day one of Red Bull Quila Surf held at Mandwa. The event kicked off on May 23rd and 24th, with the 40 kitesurfers from across India taking to the sea at Mandwa. Even amidst unfavorable wind conditions, the kitesurfers showcased some incredible techniques at sea. Judging the Indian kitesurfers based on speed, maneuverability and attitude was 2011 Women’s World Kitesurf champion, Inês Correia. After elimination on day one and day two, 12 talented kitesurfers qualified for the final round on 25th May at Murud-Janjira. After another grueling day, four most capable kitesurfers have been selected to travel to Tuticorin for a kitesurfing masterclass with Ines Correia. Over two days, Inês shall personally train Indian kitesurfing prodigies - Charmaine Pereira, Callum Pereira, Govinda Hivrale and Dikshit. K and share with them insights on cross shore and on-shore winds, safety regulations, fitness regimen; as well as help them better their kitesurfing technique. Also present during the training, will be Indian kite-surfer experts Jehan Driver from Quest Expeditions and Rahul Mallane.
In its endeavour to associate with offbeat sports world over, Red Bull aims to encourage kitesurfing enthusiasts in India. The event was organized by Red Bull under the aegis of Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation, along with Quest Adventures Pvt. Ltd., an organization that specializes in adventure sports.
