New Delhi: The North East District, led by two national-ranked players Nishaad Shah and Sabhya Virmani, defeated North West District 3-1 to claim the Youth Boys title in the Stag Inter-District Delhi State Table Tennis Championships at the Tyagraj Stadium here Tuesday.
In other team finals played this afternoon, New Delhi District annexed the Junior Girls crown beating North East District 3-1, West District beat South West 3-1 in Cadet Boys and North West downed West 3-2 to take home the Cadet Girls trophy.
It was the left-right combination of Shah and Virmani that did the trick for North East despite the pair losing squarely in the doubles to North West when Himanshu and Hardik paired to take a rubber of North East. In fact, Shah was stretched in the first rubber by Shivjit Lamba, particularly winning the first game 16-14. Shah had to bring in all his experience to outwit Lamba as he took the next two games in the best-of-three rubber to win 14-16, 11-6, 11-8. Left-handed Sabhya, too struggled, before overcoming Himanshu in the next but pulled it off with an 8-11, 11-9, 11-6 score to put his team 2-0 up. But the doubles altered the course somewhat when North West team took it in straight games of 11-4, 11-8 before Sabhya outsmarted in his reverse singles to beat Shivajit 13-11, 11-13, 11-9 for the title.

In Cadet Boys, both teams took a singles each Tajas Narang beat Prabhneet 11-4, 11-5 only to lose initiative as South West’s Chhatraj beat Lakshay Mongia 11-7, 11-8 to restoe parity. Then Tejas and Lakshay accounted for South West’s Chhatraj and Arnav 11-7, 7-11, 11-6 to put West 2-1 ahead, and then taking the responsibility on his shoulders, Tejas defeated Chhatraj 11-4, 8-11, 11-5 in the crucial fourth rubber for an overall 3-1 victory.
But the Cadet Girls final went down to the wire with North West‘s Manika Kesar doing the star turn for her team. Not only did she win her first singles beating Sumiti 11-7, 11-5, but also the doubles in the company of Kaashvi to beat Yashika and Lakshita 9-11, 11-6, 11-9 and then in the reverse singles Manika downed Sumiti 11-4, 11-3 to claim the crown.
in the Junior Girls team final Anubha and Vanshika began their campaign but it was the Vanshika and Tamanna pair put New Delhi ahead after Vanshika went down to Aanchal 6-11, 9-11. Earlier, in the first singles, Anubha had provided them the lead with a 5-11, 11-9, 11-8 win over Srishti. However, Vanshika made amends in her reverse singles to beat Srishti 11-5, 11-5 to close out for a 3-1 triumph.
With singles events beginning tomorrow, the other finals will be completed later tonight.
