New Delhi: The Coca Cola Squash Open Championship 2012 witnessed another upset as Maninder Pal Singh Sandhu lost to Divij Singh Kadan 2-3 (13-11, 12-10, 5-11, 4-11, 4-11) at Men’s U-23 category on Day 2, played at Kendriya Vidyalaya Squash Courts, R K Puram.
Divij, who is coached by Egyptian Omar Elmeligi, lost first two sets but came back brilliantly to beat Maninder, who is brother of India’s No. 2 squash player Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu, in the toughest match of Day 2 of the 105th tournament organised by Indian Squash Professionals (ISP).
Yesterday on the opening day, Dhruv Dhawan beat Vickey Gagat of Indian Air Force 3-1 (14-16, 11-5, 12-10, 11-6) in the Men’s Open category. Dhruv, who is former Delhi U-19 No. 1, lost the first set but came back brilliantly to win the match.
In the matches held yesterday in the same category, Dharmendra Singh beat Shiv Diwan 3-1 (12-11, 3-11, 11-6, 11-6), Sikander Pandey thrashed Kunal 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, 11-6), Harsh Dala out played Sabit Kumar 3-0 (11-3, 11-2, 11-1) and Farman K thumped Saket Wali 3-0 (11-3, 11-9, 15-13).
More than 350 players of all age-categories from all over the country are competing for the whopping prize money of Rs 3.25 Lacs. They were cheered by Squash players, enthusiasts and school children along with their parents.
