Double Glory for Mumbai racer Fahad Kutty

fahad kuttyCoimbatore: The concluding day of Round 2 of the 15th JK Tyre-FMSCI National Racing Championship gave motorsport lovers thrills galore at the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore. Five exciting races – two in the Polo class and one each in the LGB Formula 4, Indian Touring, and Indian Junior Touring classes – took place on the second day.

Mumbai ace Ameya Walavalkar and Goa's Donovan Vaz won the first and second races of the JK Tyre Volkswagen Polo Cup. Coimbatore’s V.Rajvirdhan, who finished third in the first race yesterday, claimed the title in the second race of the Indian Touring Cars event today. However, the day’s honours for scoring a double went to Mumbai’s Fahad Kutty as he maintained his control to annex the title in the second race of the Indian Junior Touring Cars class today.

In Race 2 of the LGB Formula 4 class, Karnataka’s Sudarshan Rao piloted his car to a nail-biting finish. Starting third on the grid as per reverse grid rules being followed in the Formula Four event, Sudarshan worked his way up to take the chequered flag to make up for his disappointment of second place finish yesterday in the first race.

The race was held in two segments of six and five laps (11 laps in place of scheduled 15 laps). Based on the cumulative timings returned by the drivers, Sudarshan Rao took 15:32.326 seconds and Vishnu Prasad, who finished second clocked 15:38.815 seconds. Delhi’s Sarosh Hataria, the first race winner yesterday, came third (15:39.668 seconds). Once again, Ashwin Sundar blundered and had to ground his car in the fifth lap after he was involved in an accident.

Explaining eloquently on the sequence of the race that witnessed many issues, Sudarshan said “With the two safety car incidents amounting to four lap duration it became tricky in between. I kept my cool though I had clutch problem during formation lap called after the race duration was reduced to six laps.” On all counts, it was a great and deserving victory for Sudarshan, who works as a co-pilot for an airline company.

Vishnu Prasad, who set a massive lead after a swift start, was expected to win the event but faced with some mechanical problems, had to be satisfied with a third place finish today.

In the JK Tyre Volkswagen Polo R Cup, the first race was run in two parts for a total of eight laps following three racing incidents involving Alisha Abdullah - the only lady driver, Ajay Kini of Hyderabad and Prashanth Tharani Singh. In the first race, Mumbai’s Pole starter Ameya Walavalkar won comfortably by four seconds ahead of second placed Rahil Noorani. Mihir Dhakar and JK Tyre driver Diego Duez came third and fourth respectively. In the second race, Donovan Vaz and A. Sandeep Kumar of Chennai came first and second and denied Walavalkar a deserving double. Walavalkar came third in the second race.

In the Indian Touring Cars class, the second race witnessed hard fought battles and seasoned local lad Arjun Balu - the first race winner yesterday - went out of the race in the eighth lap. V. Rajvirdhan and Radha Selvarajan took the top two honours, while Coimbatore veteran D. Vidya Prakash finished third.

Showing true class yet again, Fahad Kutty, the first race winner yesterday, took top honours in the second race of the Indian Junior Touring Cars class. Giving Kutty some anxious moments were Emmanuel Clarke and Feroze Khan, who finished in second and third place respectively.

Round 3 of the six round JK Tyre-FMSCI National Racing Championship 2012 will be held in Chennai from August 25-26, 2012.
