Terming gold medal win at the Commonwealth Games as a life-changing moment, Krishna in an interview to Shraddha Bagdwal of Indian Sports News talks about her training, aim and her family. Excerpts:
ISN: How are you preparing for London Olympics 2012?
Krishna Poonia: As I have already qualified for the Olympics so there is no undue pressure on me to book a berth for the mega event. I have enough time before the competition and my Olympic preparations are going on in full swing and now I am working on my fitness, especially building o my lower body muscle.
ISN: What’s your training schedule and where are you training these days?
Krishna Poonia: I train for around seven hours under the guidance of my coach-husband Virender Poonia. Presently I am training at NIS Patila. I have recently returned from US after a government-sponsored 4-month training stint there.
ISN: Tell us about your early days, when and how did you get into the sport?
Krishna Poonia: I took part in college meets but left the sports after marriage. For three years I did nothing. But husband inspired and encouraged me to take up discus throw and here I am now.
ISN: What are your strengths and weaknesses as a player?
Krishna Poonia: I think I have the confidence, commitment, concentration, which a sportsperson should have.
ISN: Being a mother, how difficult it is to stay away from your son, especially when training and competing abroad?
Krishan Poonia: It’s very difficult. I hardly get time to spend with my son Lakshay. I miss being able to spend time with him. He is a kid and he needs me more attention. I try to stay in touch with him through all means, including phone and internet. Thankfully, since my husband is my coach, it makes things a bit easy for me.
ISN: Finally, what do you have to say about your medal prospects at London Olympics?
Krishna Poonia: As far as my preparations are concerned, I am very positive about it. My career best is 63.69m. I am throwing 62 in practice and should do better when I peak at the Olympics. Yes I want to win medal in 2012 London Olympics.
