Usain Bolt, Almaz Ayana bag IAAF's Athletes of the Year award

Usain Bolt isnMonaco: Ethiopian athlete Almaz Ayana and Jamaican Usain Bolt have been named as the male and female IAAF's athletes of the year. They performed fantastically in Rio Olympics and went undefeated throughout the whole season.

Usain Bolt made his season's best of 9.81s and 19.78s to win the 100m and 200m in Rio Olympics. He also helped his team in winning the 4x100m race to a world leading 37.27 sec. He plans to run the 100m at next year World Championship in London, seeking to add in his haul of 11 world titles.

He said that he thought of breaking his record of 19.19 seconds in Rio De janeiro but unluckily his legs didn't have a record beating performance in them. "After last season, I kind of figured out that no matter how hard I work at this point, it probably is going to be hard to get the 200m world record. It's a lot more work and for me, coming to the end of my career, I am not trying to do much work. My coach told me not to get retire and come back to sport but according to me, I have adept so for me that all I wanted to," he said.

Almaz Ayana became the third Ethiopian woman to win the IAAF award after Genzebe Dibaba in 2015 and Meseret Defar in 2007. She broke the 10,000m world record that lasted for 23 years on the first day of athletics at Rio Olympics. The earlier record was of 29 minutes 31.78 seconds set by Chinese Wang Junxia in 1993. But she completed the race in 29 minutes and 17.45 seconds. She ended the year as the diamond race winner.
