Rio De Janeiro: In what has been a great outing for the Indian Paralympic athletes following the dismal performances of their "fitter" counterparts, the Indians continue to rack up medals in the event as it was now Devendra Jhajharia's turn to bring laurels to the nation by securing gold in the men's javelin throw F46 category.
Not only did he just clinch the gold medal, but did it in grand fashion throwing a personal best of 63.87 bettering his own record of 62.15 which he set back in 2004 at the Athen's Paralympic Games. This also meant that he set a new world record and in the process went down record books as the first Indian para-athlete to clinch two gold medals.
A recipient of the Padma Shri and the Arjuna Award, the now two-time Olympic Champion, lost his left arm at the tender age of nine when he touched a live cable. At that point in time, his very survival was questioned, but an amputation of his left arm meant that he could get a reprieve. Not only did he just survive, but boy, in grand fashion he did.
Now employed as a coach by the Sports Authority of India, the 35-year old claims he is not finished and has many a miles to go. Following the performances by Thangavelu, Varun and Deepa, Devendra's victory would mean that India now have four medals to their name with two gold and a silver and a bronze apiece.
One would only hope that at the end of these Games, even the para-athletes get their fair share of recognition and are honoured in the same way as their physically gifted contemporaries are.
