India win 8 medals in 1st leg of Asian Grand Prix Athletics Series 2015

Athelatic 100 mts start pole vaultNew Delhi: The Indian athletics team won eight medals, including two gold, one silver and five bronze medals in their first outing at the Asian Grand Prix Series at Bangkok on Monday. Altogether there were 14 events held in the first leg of the Asian GP.

Jinson Johnson won the Gold Medal in the men's 800m, clocking 1:48.52, while reigning Asian champion in shot put Inderjit Singh added the second Gold for the Indian camp with a throw of 19.83 metres. Long Jumper Ankit Sharma brought the silver lining for the Indians with an effort of 7.78metres, which fetched him the Silver medal.

The other medal winners in the Indian team were - 2014 Asian Games Gold Medal winner in the women's 4x400m relay and Silver medalist in the 400m in the 2015 Asian Championships, MR Poovamma, who won the Bronze medal in the women's 400m race, clocking 53.51s, while compatriot Anilda Thomas finished 4th, clocking 54.0s.

Men's quarter-miler and Asian Games 2014 Bronze medal winner Arokya Rajiv finished with a Bronze medal with a timing of 46.86s while sprinter Srabani Nanda continued her good form from the recently-concluded Asian Championships to notch up a Bronze medal with a timing of 11.58s in the women's 100m.

In the women's 100m hurdles race, India's Gayathry Govindraj bagged the Bronze medal with a timing of 13.72s, while M. Gomathi clinched the Bronze in the women's 800m, clocking 2:07.48.

In other events, India's triple Sheena NV finished 7th with a jump of 12.22 metres while IAAF World Junior Championships 2014 Bronze medal winner in discus, Navjeet Kaur Dhillon produced a best throw of 52.04m to finish 5th. The relays, both men and women's 4x100 could not finish the race due to overshooting the baton exchange. In men's javelin, Davinder Singh finished 6th with 69.58 metres while compatriot Rajinder Singh hurt himself during his third throw after managing 70.58m in his second attempt. The Indian team management had to rush Rajinder Singh to the hospital for treatment.
