Sunit Chowrasia takes charge at RCGC Juniors Cup

Kolkata: Local lad Sunit Chowrasia shot a brilliant 2-under par 70 to climb to the top of the leaderboard in the opening round of the RCGC Juniors Cup, the seventh leg of the Tata Steel IGU East Zone Junior Tour being played at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club here on Wednesday. Sunit was nine shots clear of the second placed Upanshu Sekhar Ghose in the top category (Cat A & B).

One of the top contender Raghu Bir Choudhary was placed third at 81 along with Vishesh Khanna. Viraj Khanna and Raj Ali shared the fifth spot at 84 while Yashwardhan Sarda was seventh at 85. Raj Ali also topped the Category B with Yashwardhan in second place. Gurkirat Singh and Udayajit Bhalotia were tied for the third place at 86.

In Category C, it was Hashan Rahman who took the lead with a total of 5-over 77 while Bibek Sardar and Devansh Chadha were second and third with an aggregate of 86 and 87 respectively. Sandeep Yadav emerged as the leader in Category D when he shot a 6-over par 78. Divij Sehgal was lying second at 92 while Rajib Ali was third. Kushal Bagrodia topped the Category E with a total of 47 while
Arav Sanghavi was second. Aryaman Chakravarti was third while Pranshu Poddar was fourth.

Sunit who began from the 10th tee made a super start saving pars on the first two holes while making a birdie on the par-4 12th. He lost the advantage on the very next hole when he made a bogey. However, he did not look back as he made back to back birdies on the par-5 15th and par-4 16th without committing any further mistakes to take the turn at 2-under. With a birdie-bogey start on his back nine, Sunit was still 2-under. He flirted with birdies but could not convert any of them.

However, the most important thing was that the lean golfer stayed away from committing mistakes until he finished his round to sign a card of 2-under par.

“It was like a dream round. Everything was falling in place,” said Sunit who is third on the IGU Order of merit. “Both my hitting and putting was good,. Of course I had the advantage of playing at my home course but it was not easy. The break did helped me to recover,” said Sunit  who had skipped the last event. “I am planning to stick to basics – keep the ball in play and try and make as many pars as possible,” added the leader who is looking for his second win of the season.
