New Delhi, December 10: The 10th Amity Polo Cup (8 Goal) concluded today with nail-biting finals between Delhiites Polo and Jindal Panther at the Jaipur Polo Grounds here on Sunday.

Jindal Panther edged out Delhiites Polo by 5 goals to 3 ½  in the finals to lift the prestigious Amity Polo Cup 2017. Simran Singh Shergill scored all 5 goals for Jindal Panther and Dhruvpal Godara scored 2 and Gaurav Sahgal scored 1 goal for Delhiites Polo which started with ½ goal on Handicap.

Queen, ridden by Mr. Gaurav Sahgal was adjudged the Best Polo Pony of the Tournament and Simran Shergill, who scored  5 goals for the Champion team, was named the most valuable player of the match.

The finals had a blazing start with Gaurav Sahgal scoring the opening goal for Delhiites Polo in the first few minutes of the Ist chukker which started with an advantage of half a goal handicap. Simran Shergill opened the account for Jindal Panthers by converting 60 yard penalty awarded in favor of Jindal Panthers.

Second chukker begun with Simran Shergill converting a 40 yard penalty in favor of Jindal Panthers, thereby striking a second goal for the team. Taking the lead ahead, Simran again striked a goal in favor of the team. In return, Dhruvpal Godara was quick to strike a goal in favor of Delhiites Polo.

During the third chukker, Simran Shergill scored the fourth goal for Jindal Panthers and Dhruvpal Godara scored a goal for Delhiites Polo by converting a 40 yard penalty.

Jindal Panthers maintained their lead in last and the final chukker with Simran Shergill striking a final goal of the Tournament for Jindal Panthers and for Delhiites Polo, it was a goalless chukker.

The glistening Trophy was presented by General Bipin Rawat, UYSM, AVSM, YSM, SM, VSM- Chief of the Army Staff, Indian Army, Dr. Ashok Chauhan- Founder President, Amity Group, Dr. (Mrs.) Amita Chauhan- Chairperson, Amity International Schools, Dr. Atul Chauhan- Chancellor, Amity University and Mrs. Pooja Chauhan- Vice Chairperson, Amity Humanity Foundation.

He commended Amity for the brilliant service it has been doing for the country by providing quality education to the youth of the country and also to the under- privileged boys and girls of the society.

Dr. Ashok K Chauhan, while sharing his thoughts, thanked General Bipin Rawat for taking out time from his busy schedule for the finals of the Tournament and announced that a Shield will be instituted in the name of General Bipin Rawat’s father for the brilliant performers of Amity Indian Military College, Manesar. He congratulated the players for their spectacular sportsmanship and team spirit. He stressed that philanthropy and societal welfare is at the heart of Amity and in future also, more such charitable events will be organized to instill a sense of social responsibility and the spirit of “Service before Self” in the youth of the country studying in Amity Educational Institutions. Dr. Chauhan shared that the proceeds of Amity Polo Cup will be used to better the lives of underprivileged girls and boys studying under “AMITASHA” and “ATULASHA” projects respectively, being run under Amity Humanity Foundation- the social renaissance engine of Amity.

Evincing joy and contentment, Ms. Pooja Chauhan stated that it is imperative to bring underprivileged girls and boys in the mainstream through education to ensure the growth and development of the country. She stressed that social disparity needs to be bridged in the country and education is a great enabler and empowering instrument for the same. She shared that Amity Polo Cup reaffirms Amity’s pledge to transform the lives of thousands of underprivileged girls and boys by providing them free education, books and food. The initiative, she stressed, is one of the many initiatives of Amity Humanity Foundation to impact social development.

During the occasion, a Coffee Table Book titled “Polo- the Insight” commemorating 10 years of Amity Polo Cup was released by distinguished guests including General Bipin Rawat and his wife- Mrs. Mudhulika Rawat, Dr. Ashok K Chauhan, Dr. (Mrs.) Amita Chauhan, Dr. Atul Chauhan, Mrs. Pooja Chauhan and Ms. Sapna Chauhan- Vice Chairperson, Amiown Schools. The Book outlines the journey of the regale sports of Polo in India through facts and anecdotes by Polo Players and photographs clicked by eminent photographers.

6 teams participated in the Tournament which was played on a half league basis with seasoned polo players of handicap +5 and +6 including Basheer Ali, Dhruvpal Godara, Samir Suhag, Abhimanyu Pathak and Simran Shergill. The teams were divided into two pools -Pool A – Beast Carnatic, Delhiites Polo, Sahara Warriors and Pool B – Aravali Polo, Adie Broswon, Jindal Panther.
