23rd January 2016 - The day when a new star named Jasprit Bumrah was born. The Gujarat-born bowling sensation showed his exceptional talent with the bowl as he went on to become the highest wicket-taker in the series against the Australians. India won the series convincingly, 3-0, but the bowlers contribution was duly noted by then Indian captain MS Dhoni. He made his debut after Mohammad Shami's unfortunate injury.
Fast forward to 29th January this year, Bumrah won the hearts of millions when his death bowling mastery restricted the England side from scoring the remaining runs. After an incredible 18th over where he conceded only 3 runs, Kohli gave him the responsibility of bowling the last over. 8 needed from 6 balls - Indians around the globe had all but lost hope. But the pacer rose to the situation by bowling the over of his life. Only 2 runs were scored in the over which assured India winning the match by 5 runs.
The 23 year old's unorthodox action grabbed the eyeballs of plenty during his debut year in the IPL. Playing for the Mumbai Indians, he learnt to master the yorker from his teammate Lasith Malinga. Malinga touted as the death over expert has an exceptional consistency rate of aiming the block hole with ease and Bumrah couldn't hope for a better mentor. He played for the Gujarat Ranji team during his early days and was a regular feature in the India A side. Unfortunately fate took a drastic turn, when he was sidelined with a serious injury. He came back with zeal and hunger in his mind and after a couple of years got his International cap.
With the Champions Trophy in horizon, death bowling will be a key factor for each team. India over the years have been blessed with fast bowlers of varying nature but one boy truly stands out among the crowd - Jaspreet Bumrah.
