Gavaskars, Binnys, Manjekars: Father-son duo who played cricket for India

Sunil Gavaskar1Cricket history had witnessed a pleasant display of one-of-the-most spectacular duos of the cricket era- a Father-Son duo. Indians aren’t isolated from this feat either. There were many instances and examples of cricket families who passed on their legacies to the coming generations. 

On an interesting note, we have encapsulated a compilation of such list where a Father and his son(s) played international/national cricket for India.

1. SUNIL GAVASKAR AND ROHAN GAVASKAR

Sunil Gavaskar aka ‘Sunny’ was widely regarded as one of the finest openers in the history of Test-Cricket. He was the very first Indian player to reach 10,000 runs in Test cricket-a magnificent feet at that time!

However, his son-Rohan Gavaskar was not able to match his father supremacy. He featured in only 11 ODI’s with a mediocre tally of only 1 half-century to his credit. He failed to cement his place in his dream team-The Indian cricket side. Amazingly, Rohan was pretty successful playing for Bengal in the domestic cricket circuit, where he averages a grand average of 50. 35 in his first-class matches.

2. VIJAY MANJREKAR AND SANJAY MANJREKAR

Vijay Manjrekar had a bright and illustrious test career during which he scored 3208 runs in 55 tests, scalping 7 tons and 15 half centuries to his name. He was remarkably proficient in cutting and hooking the deliveries.

His son Sanjay Manjrekar went on to bear the torch of his family's legacy and went on to play for India. Sanjay scored 2043 runs in 37 tests and amassed a respectable tally of 1994 runs in 74 ODI’s.

Sanjay announced his retirement from all-forms-of-cricket at the premature age of 31 and involved himself in the field of commentary. Sanjay’s voice is well known for his crisp and fluent style of commentating.

3. LALA AMARNATH AND MOHINDER AMARNATH

Lala Amarnath was the very first Indian test cricketer to score a century on debut. He was the first test captain after India's Independence. He plundered 878 runs in 24 tests. Lala had 2 sons named Mohinder and Surinder. They both went on to play for India.

Mohinder Amarnath was the proud member of the champion squad, which won the World Cup in 1983. Mohinder played 69 Tests, scored 4378 runs at a respectable average of 42.50.
Comparatively, Surinder was not as successful as his able sibling and played only 10 tests for India.

4. YOGRAJ SINGH AND YUVRAJ SINGH

Yograj Singh who had recently appeared in the Rakesh Omprakash Mehra’s stellar film ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ is the father of the all very famous and flamboyant southpaw-Yuvraj Singh. This six-machine was the fulcrum in the Team India’s squad.

Yuvraj has played 40 tests for India and has belted 1900 runs with 3 tons and 11 fifties to his name. Yuvraj is much more expressive in the limited versions of the cricket where he bloomed and prospered. India rediscovered a specialist ‘power-hitter’ who was the winning force behind India’s success at the 2011 World Cup. He did win the Man-of-the-tournament award for his exceptional performance. Speaking about Yuvi’s ODI figures, He acquired 13 tons and 51 half-centuries- a magnificent feat!


5. ROGER BINNY AND STUART BINNY

During the 1980’s Roger Binny made his appearance and got his renowned-fame as one-of-the-best all-rounders for India. He was also involved in the winning-squad of 1983’s World Cup. He played in 27 tests and scored 830 runs and took a tally of 47 wickets. Roger was even more successful in the shorter formats of this game, wherein he amassed 629 runs in 72 ODI’s and took 77 wickets.

His son Stuart is still struggling to cement is place in the Indian side. Stuart came into focus when he took 6 wickets for a dearth of 4 runs against an encounter with Bangladesh. His ODI figures of 6-4 are the best figures for an Indian bowler in ODI’s. But Stuart’s career was smeared with inconsistent and lack-luster performances. He still has a definite chance to prove his prowess to the Indian side.

6. IFTIKHAR ALI KHAN PATAUDI AND MANSOOR ALI KHAN PATAUDI

Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi played test cricket for both India and England, playing 3 tests for each of them. He also captained India to England’s tour in the year 1946. He also has a magnificent ton named under his Royal name. Iktikhar’s son-Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi got more success and fame.

Mansoor played 46 Tests for India. He amassed 2793 runs with 16 tons and 17 fifties to his name. His illustrious career had a shocking fact! Mansoor played throughout his career with ONLY his left-eye. His right eye was permanently damaged in an unfortunate accident.

This royal family made their presence felt with their famous style and grand performances.

7. VINOO MANKAD AND ASHOK MANKADSHOK MANKAD

Vinoo Mankad was a solid opener and a slow-left arm orthodox bowler. He has set a record-opening partnership of 413 runs with Pranab Roy-a record which stood firmly for more than 5 decades!

Vinoo played 44 tests scored 2109 runs which included 5 tons and 6 fifties. He also took 162 wickets which included eight 5-wikcet hauls. It was due to Vinoo Mankad, the controversial form of run-out came into existence – it was called as ‘Mankading’!

His son Ashok Mankad went on to play 22 tests and scored 991 runs. Though, he played only 1 ODI, wherein he scored 44 and took 1 wicket.

8. PRANAB ROY AND PANKAJ ROY

Pranab Roy played as many as 43 tests for India. He amassed a heavy total of 2442 runs which consisted of 5 tons and 9 half-centuries. Pranab played for Bengal, grabbed an enormous tally of 11,068 runs in his 185 1st-Class matches.

His son Pankaj Roy was not able to match his father’s greatness and could play only 2 tests for India.


9. HEMANT KANITKAR AND HRISHIKESH KANITKAR

Hemant played 2 tests for India and acquired 111 runs in 1974. Surprisingly, His son Hrishikesh also played only two tests.

Hrishikesh Kanitkar was a left-handed batsman and a right-arm offie. When he announced his official retirement in 2015, he was one of the only batsmen to have scored 8000-plus runs in the Ranji Trophy. He also went on to captain his side in the winning cause of Elite and Plate league titles.

He is well known for hitting the winning runs at the Silver Jubilee Independence Cup in 1998l.
