NorthEast United F.C vs Chennaiyin F.C: Yellow cards dominated the match

In today's match between NorthEast United F.C and Chennaiyin F.C at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, Guwahati, NorthEast United F.C had to win this match owing to a string of losses from the start of the tournament whereas Chennaiyin F.C just needed to continue its winning streak. There was a huge crowd attendance of about 19,972 at the stadium.

NorthEast United F.C had made seven changes to the playing eleven to find the right combination. Chennaiyin F.C had given rest to Elano, Mendoza and a few others. Though a tough was expected between the teams, unfortunately it turned out to be an ill-tempered game. Thanks to the referee for making the game worse as eleven yellow cards and a red came out of nowhere.

Initially, Kamara and Fikru missed easy chances for their respective teams. During the 40th minute Khabra was shown a yellow for aggressive behaviour with the referee and followed by a red. The referee it seemed had very bad memory as he had thought Khabra was already booked and sent him off for the so called second yellow card. At the end of first half, the visitors were down to ten men and both teams failed to make an impression. NorthEast United F.C squandered their penalty to a great save by Edel.

The second half too was not entertaining except for the fights between the teams. The real entertainment was from the referee showing yellow cards for fouls which didn't deserve bookings. Both Elano and Mendoza were brought on as the team were struggling without pace and finish. At the fag end of the game, a controversial penalty was given in favour of the host, resulting in Marco Materazzi storming off into the tunnel. Edel nearly saved this too but Simao's placement was on the spot. Two minutes later, Sanju assisted Velez, who found the back of the net after a decent finish.
It was a lacklustre performance from both teams, but an important win for NorthEast United F.C.

Here are the ways by which both teams can improve to make a mark in this tournament

NorthEast United F.C

--They must improve on their finishing

--Passing must improve

--They should also try playmaking from the centre

--The defence must coordinate well

Chennaiyin F.C

--Except for Mendoza and a few others, the team lacks pace

--Marco Materazzi must stick on to a constant playing eleven

--Finishing is poor, as Fikru must get back his scoring capabilities

--Crosses should be more accurate because they are easily intercepted
