A match against Pakistan is always a thriller and a pressure game and the match against our arch-rivals during 2010 Commonwealth Games was no different. The crucial win-or-leave match attracted a huge crowd and by God’s grace, our fans didn’t leave the stadium disappointed.
Riding on the crowd’s support, our players played the match of their life. We played with energy and aggression and at the same time we managed to stay calm despite the emotions flying high from all quarters.
We started with a bang India and thrashed Pakistan 7-4 in the match that was rather one-sided. We took an early 2-0 lead on penalty corners taken by Sandeep Singh. Sandeep also helped Shivendra score the third goal, followed by Saravanjit Singh tapping in the fourth goal. It was a complete delight for the Indian fans and there was complete frenzy in the stadium. But Pakistan scored twice to narrow the margin. However, we answered with two more by 45th minute to make the score 6-2. Even though Pakistan did not give in and continued to play with all its might, India wrapped up the match with a seventh goal by 59th minute.
With this victory, we ensured a semifinal berth at the Delhi Commonwealth Games. This is one match, which will remain etched in my mind for long.
