Climax LawrenceBeing part of the Indian team since 2002, Climax Lawrence had been an integral part of squad before he hung up his boots early this year after being unceremoniously dropped by national coach Savio Mederia from the Indian probable squad for the AFC Challenge to be held in 2012. Known for his high-intensity work rate, he had been marshaling India’s midfield for almost a decade. In an interview to Indian Sports News, the former captain talks about Indian football, its future and many more. EXCERPTS:

ISN: You have been playing football for so long.  After you feeling relaxed after announcing your retirement?
Climax:
No, not at all. I have just retired from my national commitment. I will continue playing for my club. So still a lot of football to play.

ISN: What do you think of India’s chances in the coming AFC challengers?
Climax:
India has got a young breed of talents who can take the team to victory and greater glories in future.

ISN: So you don’t think your absence will create much problem for the team?
Climax:
Definitely not. Team has got some fresh talents like Jeje, Sabeeth and Sushil. So I don’t think it’s a big thing to worry about.

ISN: Where do you think Indian team in next few years? Any chance of India qualifying for the World Cup in next 10 or 12 years…
Climax:
Like I said, the team is improving and the young guys are showing a lot of character and dedication. So I do see them making it to the big events in the next 8-12 years.

ISN: If statistics is anything to go by, the popularity of the game which is in gradual decline. Isn’t it a big concern for Indian football?
Climax:
No, the main reason is that football is not getting the kind of exposure that it should get. It’s not being advertised well like cricket. And it’s not that people do not love football, but it’s all because of the less exposure being given to football. For people to throng the stadium, they need to know about the game and events taking place around. So it’s high time we start thinking on that line.

ISN: Will you like to play for the nation for few more years if AIFF asks for your service?
Climax:
Right now no.

ISN: Whom do you think will fill into the shoes of Bhaichung Bhutia as far as captaincy is concerned?
Climax:
I don’t want to comment on it. Maybe any of the senior players.

ISN: Who has been the motivator for you in your career?
Climax:
Bhaichung Bhutia. He always guided me how to play and taught me to plan the game.

ISN: Who were your favourites in the team?
Climax:
Jopaul and Bhaichung.

ISN: IM Vijayan or Bhaichung? Who is the best?
Climax:
Both are equally good.

ISN: What’s your future plan?
Climax:
No plans as of now.
