I’m a pretty patient person but I’m also a very fierce competitor: Berry Henson

Berry-Henson33-year-old Berry Henson from the United States says that his laid-back nature belies his competitive streak and tells why he has learnt to love himself. Excerpts from an interview:

What is the one tournament that you want to win in Asia and around the world?

It has to be the CIMB Classic as that will definitely be the one I want to win out here on the Asian Tour. The US Open is another that I want to win. I’ve already won one National Open in the Philippines and it would be great if I get to win my own National Open.

If there was one rule of golf which you can change, what would it be?

You should get a free drop if you hit your shot into the divot.

How would you describe yourself as a golfer?

I feel like I’m a pretty patient person but I’m also a very fierce competitor deep down inside. On the outside, I’m pretty laid-back and calm but inside, I want to kick everyone’s butt when I’m out on the course.

Which golf course do you really want to play on?

I hope to play at the Augusta National Golf Club as I’ve never played there before.

What would you do if there’s no internet or television in your hotel room during the tournament week?

Hopefully I have enough movies on my computer to last me through the week.

What is your best advice received as a professional golfer?

I became good friend with Doug Sanders who’s an old time Tour pro. He told me a while back that when you follow this career, there’s going to be people who will try to bring you down and are negative. But he said that if you can wake up and look at yourself in the mirror every day, smile and say I like you, he said you’ll go very far. I’ve always taken that advice and learnt to be happy with who I am as a person and not let anybody bring negativity into my life.

When you win a golf tournament, who do you want to see when you sink that winning putt?

My family. My mum and dad haven’t seen me win an event. Unfortunately, they haven’t been out here to Asia yet so it’ll be great to have them around when I win.

What is the oldest club in your golf bag?

I’ve a hybrid from 2007. It’s an Adams three-hybrid which I’ve kept in the bag for a long time.

If you are not a professional golfer, what would you be?

I’ll either be a professional dancer or a deejay as I love music!
