Cricket is a complicated game by itself with the kind of rules it brings to the table and ICC is not making it any easier with their tweaks and changes which is more of a kind of experiment than anything else. But even experiments should be done in a manner which is fruitful to the game than making changes just for the sake of making it.
ICC over the years have managed to change a lot a rule which makes little sense and makes it an unfair game as it either gives an undue advantage to the bowler to the batsmen. Lets have a look at rules which can even baffle the best of people.
Not allowing runners: The batsmen are not allowed runners these days even if he is suffering from an external injury or is suffering from cramps and or has a hamstring problem while playing in the middle. That would have made a bit of sense if the bowlers were not allowed to take breaks as and when they feel like as it gives an undue advantage to the bowler who can come in and bowl fast and then can go back to the pavilion to take a break.
The ball change rule: The new rule of ball change is completely in favour of the overseas teams who have a seam attack and in places like Australia, New Zealand and South Africa playing a spinner would be more of a luxury than a bowler who can make an impact. By allowing two new balls from both ends it is taking the spinners out of the game as the ball will remain pretty new from both the ends till the end of the innings. The seamers will have more grip on the match and quality spinners will soon become extinct in the shorter format of the game.
Drinks between overs: The bowlers can have drinks in between overs along with supplements or health drinks which can help them to conserve more energy in the middle of a spell but a batsman would never get such luxuries and generally can only have it in a drinks break or while changing gloves or say for example a bat.
Duckworth-Lewis rule: While ICC have changed a lot of rules they have never tried to fiddle with Duckworth-Lewis method in a rain curtailed match. The system of Duckworth-Lewis is more than complicated and very few people understand the formula but sometimes the target given or revised just does not seem fair.
It will do a world of good to the game if the International Cricket Council looks into these rules and try to install some sense in it as somewhere down the line the game suffers and sometimes it does not make very good viewing.
