You cannot drop a player on the basis of just one match: Srikkanth

Former chairman of the selection committee, Krishnamachari Srikkanth defended the decision of retaining three spinners in the squad for the Kolkata Test.

Indian spinners were unimpressive and leaked runs in the Mumbai Test. They looked ordinary on the track where English spinners took 19 out of the 20 Indian wickets that fell.

Srikkanth told a TV channel that the current selectors were right in retaining the same squad.

On whether India should have picked a leg-spinner, Srikkanth said that it is always great to have a leg-spinner in the squad, but you cannot drop a player on the basis of just one match.

Srikkanth also defended Harbhajan Singh who made a disappointing comeback in the Mumbai Test, he said that one cannot just drop him after effectively just one innings. Everybody knows he is yet to get his old form back and he needs to given some more time.

The Indian selectors instead of picking the squad for two Tests, announced the squad for only one Test. Srikkanth said that it will send a message to the non-performing players. He said that it is probably right that they have selected the squad for just the third Test.

He said that if some players do not perform in the Kolkata Test then they might find it difficult in the future.
