London Olympics proved that Indian female athletes are no pushovers and have the capacity to compete at highest level

London Olympics six medal tally is India’s best performance till date and it is the first time since 2000 Sydney Olympics that female sport stars from the country have ended bagging honors. Mary Kom and Saina Nehwal have won individual medals in their respective sports and this is proof enough that women in India are no pushovers and they can compete at the same level as their male counterparts.

For the record, this time out of the 81 athletes who represented India at London Olympics, only 23 athletes were female. While the male athletes have won four medals, women’s share stands at two.  The rate of conversion isn't that high but then at least it is better than their male counterparts. Their exploits show that they are now coming with terms with the men in the country.

India have renowned females athletes like Saina, Kom, Sania Mirza, Krishna Poonia, Sudha Singh, Shagun Chowdhary, Annuraj Singh to name a few. All of these athletes have been great in their respective sports and made India proud at different competitions be it Asian Games, Commonwealth or World competitions. They have been doing well and irrespective of the fact that they are less known or less revered, they still try and do everything in their capacity to keep the country’s flag flying high.

Other countries give same kind of preference to both female and male athletes and the results are in front of everyone. America, China, Great Britain, and Australia win so many medals because the ratio between male and female winners is even.

India do have good female athletes and they also have the capacity to produce good reuslts, but only thing lacking is the proper patronage. The authority concerned should try and promote more of female athletes. It is a fact that female athletes are neglected, be it in sponsorship, coaching facilities or patronage and if the attention is diverted equally towards them and if given the same kind of importance as their male counterparts, these athletes can give the peer from the opposite sex a run for their money and they are sure to touch new and greater heights.
