Indian contingent at London Olympics: Hits & Flops so far...

Indians have had a mixed luck at the London Olympics so far and even though they surpass the Beijing Olympics tally of three medals as they have already won four medals there were few upsets as some of their stalwarts failed to live up to the expectations.

Let us have a look at few hits and flops from India at Olympics so far:

Hits:

Gagan Narang: He won the first medal for India at this Olympics. This was his third Olympics and after meeting failures in previous two attempts he finally stood on the podium. He won a bronze medal in the 10-meter Air Rifle event with an overall score of 701.1

Vijay Kumar: Vijay Kumar became the second Indian after Gagan Narang to win the medal at the London Olympics. Vijay won a silver medal in the men's 25m Rapid Fire Pistol.  Vijay shot the target 30 times out of 40in the series comprising eight rounds of five shots each. Vijay became the fourth shooter after Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Abhinav Bindra and Gagan Narang to have won an Olympic medal.

Saina Nehwal: The badminton queen of India made the country proud after she won the bronze medal. She won the medal after the World number 2 of China Xin Wang of China conceded the match due to a knee injury. The 22 year old Hyderabadi in course of winning the medal became the first Indian shuttler to win an Olympic medal.

Mary Kom: The five times World Champion ‘Magnificent Mary’ has already ensured herself a medal after she made it to the semi-finals of event. She is now sure of a bronze but a win will put her into the race for gold medal.

Devendro Singh: He is the only male boxer who is still alive in the race for a medal. With two comprehensive wins, the young Indian pugilist is in the quarterfinals and a win here would ensure him of a medal.

Parupalli Kashyap: Known for his giant killing abilities he did account for some top seed casualties. He lead his group at the league stages and was looking good before going down to number 1 seeded player Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia. He put up a brave show in the quarterfinals but then could not match Wei's game and went down bravely.

Flops:

Archery Team: Indian Archery Team comprising of World number 1 Deepika Kumari, Laishram Bombayla Devi, Chekrovulo Swuro , Jayanta Talukdar, Rahul Banerjee and Tarundeep Rai entered the mega event with high billings but failed to live up to it. First they tasted defeat in the team event, and then it looked like they would come good in the individual recurve but then failed there as well and none could make it to the finals.

Indian Hockey Team: They were just horrible. They were not a strong medal prospect but everyone expected them to put a fight but then they were woeful. They are the only team out of the 12 teams who ended the tournament pointless.

Ronjan Sodhi: One of the best bet for India at the Olympics, Ronjan shot very bad and could not even make it to the finals of the double trap event. He finished the qualification round 10th position.

Jwala Gutta-Ashwini Ponappa: The star Indian badminton pair of India failed to live up to the expectations. They came into the tournament as strong competitors but then could not move past the first round. The commonwealth games gold medalist won one and lost one.
