It was back in 1948 London Olympics that Fanny Blankers-Koen’s inspiring performance set a benchmark for all the mothers at the Games and since then all the editions of the mega events have seen ‘Super Moms’ in action and this year is not any different.
It has seen many ‘Super Moms’ in action who has been able to successfully strike the right balance between family and performance.
Here are few of the ‘Super Moms’ who were seen in the action at the 2012 London Games.
1) Kerri Walsh Jennings ( Beach Volleyball): The two times Olympics champion Kerri Walsh Jennings of United States of America married to Casey Jennings and mother of Joseph Michael and Sundance Thomas will be appearing in her third straight finals. This is her first Olympics after her motherhood and she does not have seemed to lose focus and is looking very for third Olympic crown on the trot.
2) Oksana Chusovitina (Gymnastics): London Olympics was the last Olympics for Oksana. Mother of a 13 year old boy who made her first appearance in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics was born in Uzbekistan has represented Soviet Union and Uzbekistan before moving to Germany in 2002 after her son was diagnosed of acute lymphocytic leukaemia. While her son’s treatment was going on, she concentrated on her training and went on to attain glory at different international events including a silver at the 2008 Beijing Games. She has finally called it a day after the London Olympics with a fifth place finish at her signature apparatus.
3) Mary Kom (Boxing): Known as Magnificent Mary, she is five times World champion and the torchbearer for women’s boxing in India. She is at her first Olympics as this is the first time women’s boxing has been involved in the quadrennial event. She has already ensured a medal after making it to the semis of the 51 kg category. Mother of twin sons, Rechungvar and Khupneiva said that an Olympics medal would set her free. The legendary Indian pugilist has many international events and surely leads this pack of super moms in London Olympics.
4) Kim Clijsters (Tennis): The super mom of professional tennis took a sabbatical from the sport in 2007 citing injury reasons and came back to tour in 2009 one year after she gave back birth to her daughter. Post her daughter’s birth, this is Clijsters first Olympics but then could not end it on a successful note as she lost to Maria Sharapova in the quarterfinals.
