London: Indian discus thrower Vikas Gowda rolled out a below par performance to finish eighth in the men's discus throw event in London Olympics in London on Tuesday.
A strong show was expected out of Gowda especially after his 65.20 throw at the qualification round but then he failed to live up to it and hurled his discus to a distance of 64.79.
His attempt was enough to keep him in the competition after three rounds where four athletes got eliminated out of the 12.
Gowda after his first throw had subsequent throws of 60.95m, 63.03m, 64.15m, 64.48m and 63.89m.
Robert Harting of Germany, the reigning World champion won the gold with a throw of 68.27m while the silver went to Asian champion Ehsan Hadadi of Iran who threw 68.18m.
Gerd Kanter of Estonia clinched the bronze with his attempt of 68.03m.
Gowda’s season personal best throw was 66.28m which he achieved during the London Games run up.
