London Olympics: Indian stars in action today

London: After the glittering opening ceremony of 2012 London Olympics, where millions around the world witnessed Danny Boyle unravel his magic, the elite athletes carrying the hopes of millions of their countrymen would get down to serious business today and try to kick things-off in style.

India is amongst one of the countries which would see its sporting stars eyeing for glory today. Indians already started their journey yesterday with the archery ranking rounds (both men and women). The opening day did not go well for the Indian Contingent though, but they are expected to overcome it and aim for glory.

Here are the list of events India would field their athletes today:

Badminton:

The high profile Indian badminton contingent comprising of five shuttlers would start off their battle today in the doubles event and men’s singles event. Except for Saina Nehwal all the other Indian shuttlers would be in action. The mixed doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and V Diju kick things off followed by P Kashyap and then women’s doubles event of Jwala-Ashwini Ponnapa.

Jwala-Diju would face off against Liliyana Natsir/ Tontowi Ahmad of Indonesia, whereas Kashyap would lock horns agaisnt Yuhan Tan of Belgium. Jwala-Ashwini would then later in the day team-up against Japanese duo of Reika Kakiiwa/ Mizuki Fujii.

Archery

They started their Olympics on a rather bad note and both the men’s and women’s events failed to deliver on the expected lines, but then they are expected to get over it and outshine their rivals in the hallowed ground of Lord’s. Today’s action would see the men’s team of Jayanta Talukdar, Rahul Banerjee and Tarundeep Rai trying to overcome the opening days’s blues and go out all guns in the medal round. India who finished 12th in the ranking round will start off against Japan, who finished fifth and if they go through they would America who got a bye into the quarterfinals.

Boxing

Seen as strong medal prospect, the contingent’s most experienced Vijender Singh (75 kgs) and the youngest member Shiva Thapa (56 kgs) would see Indian Boxing Team roll things off at London.

Thapa will fight it out against Mexico’s Oscar Valdez in the bantamweight category whereas Beijing Games bronze medallist Vijender would face off against Danabek Suzhanov of Kazakhstan in the middleweight category.

Tennis

There would not be much to offer from the tennis event as only Sania Mirza and Rushmi Chakravarthi, will take on the Chinese Taipei pairing of Su-Wei Hsieh/ Chia-Jung Chuang. None other Indian tennis stars would be seen in action today.

Table Tennis:

Both the young paddlers who made it to the Olympics will be action. Ankita Das would face Sara Ramirez of Spain whereas Soumyajit Ghosh is up against Gustavo Tsuboi of Brazil.

Lone athlete to represent India at the weightlifting event, Soniya Chanu would try to do a enter into the medal tally when she takes part in the 48 kg weight category.
