Hambantota: India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and the India team have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during its 21-run victory against Sri Lanka in the first One Day International held in Hambantota on Saturday (21 July).
The India side was ruled to be an over short of its target when time allowances were taken into consideration. As such, Chris Broad of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees imposed a 20 per cent fine on Dhoni while each of his player received 10-per-cent-fines.
Meanwhile Kumar Sangakakara’s achievement of becoming the first batsman to top 1000 runs in one-day internationals for the current calendar year and his valiant century proved a vain effort as India beat Sri Lanka by 21 runs to win the first one-day international played at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium here on Saturday and go 1-up in the five-match series.
India’s formidable total of 314 for six wickets was largely based on a second wicket partnership of 173 off 176 balls between Virender Sehwag who missed out on a century by four runs and Virat Kohli who once again showed his liking for the Lankan bowling by his third consecutive century against them and overall his 12th in ODIs.
