Euro Cup 2012: Best five matches of the tournament

 

Euro Cup 2012 finished two days back with Spain winning it for the second consecutive days and successfully retained the Henry Delaunay Trophy. The tournament which lasted for more than 20 days and did have many good matches and let us take a look at few of the best matches of the tournament

Spain vs Portugal (1st semi final): It was the second time that the Iberian rivals were playing in a major tournament and it expected to be a cracker of a match. And expected it was a closely fought match and nothing could separate these two teams in for 120 minutes. Both the teams toiled hard but could not succeed to create an opening. As a result the match had to decided by penalty shootout and Spain won it 4-2.

Denmark vs Portugal (11th league match): It was a much win match for Portugal after their 1-0 loss to Germany and had to win at any cost to avoid an early exit. The match was extremely close and Pepe opened the scoring for the Selacao and they added one more through Helder Postiga.  But then Danes added two goals through Nicklas Bedtner and it looked like the match would end as a draw and Portugal were almost on the way out, but then a late goal by Silvestre Varela helped them win the match to stay alive in the tournament.

Germany vs Portugal (4th league match): It was the tournament for both the teams and it was expected to be a cracker of a match. Both the teams were in the ‘group of death’ and they played up to their reputation. Germany won the match 1-0 due to a Mario Gomez strike. The match looked evenly poised and way it was played did show to the World that why it was the toughest group of the tournament.

Spain vs Italy (5th league match): Spain started the match as a clear favorite in the match but then Italy defied all odds to draw the match. Both the teams looked in supreme form and were engaged in a neck to neck battle. Cesc Fabregas scored for the Spaniards whereas it was Antonio di Natale who scored for the Azzuri’s.

Sweden vs France (20th league match): The match was a pride salvaging match for Sweden as they were already were out of the tournament and wanted to leave the tournament on the high. And sure did they leave the tournament on a good note and won the match 2-0. Till the half time they were tied 0-0 but in the second half it was Roman Ibrahimovic’s acrobatic volley that opened their account. They scored the second goal in the dying moments when Henrik Larson smashed a volley after Wilhelmsson shot rebounded off the crossbar.
