Euro 2012 Final--Spain vs Italy: Hits & Flops…

Spain has entered the history books after they defeated Italy 4-0 to win the Euro Cup 2012. Their win yesterday has seen them earn a unique of distinction of winning three major competitions in a row. The feat has indeed made them the greatest footballing nation of the world.

The match which looked like it would be evenly poised was dominated by Spain, who changed the formation from 4-6-0 to 4-3-3 for this match, from the word go .

They answered their critics with their signature ‘tiki-tika’ which everyone thought was getting way to boring and enjoyed lion’s share of possession on the pitch. It looked as if nothing could stop Spain and they actually after series of average performances finally lived up to their reputation and showed the world that why they are the top ranked team in the World. Thumbs up to Italy for coming so far, but then they proved no match for the La Roja.

Here are some of the hits and flops of the match:

Spain:

Iker Cassilas: Looked little vulnerable while trying to block crosses and set pieces but then was rock solid when it came to blocking attempts at the goals. Did make some crucial saves to ensure a clean sheet for Spain.

Andres Iniesta: Hero for Spain in Johannesburg two years back at the World Cup finals, though could not get on the score-sheet but then was again the driving force for the team. He was class apart in the midfield, dribbled past defenders at will and delivered some inch perfect passes. He was the one who played a huge role in the opening goal after he played a thorough ball to Cesc Fabregas in the Italian penalty area.

Xavi Hernandez: He perhaps saved his best for the ultimate match of the tournament. After taking a dip in the earlier matches, rose up to the occasion yesterday. He dictated terms in the midfield, won the battle for supremacy over Andrea Pirlo and had two assist to his name. Missed a real goal scoring opportunity in the first half though.

Fernando Torres: The Chelsea striker, who had been under fire for the tournament, finally picked up the Golden boot award despite being on level with Mario Gomez of Germany. Both the players have three goals and an assist. But then Torres won it because of lesser minutes played. He was on the roll in last match, was for just 15 minutes on the ground, scored the third one and also assisted his Chelsea teammate Juan Mata for the fourth.

Spain was at their dominant best and there was no week performance from their team

Italy:

Hits:

Andrea Pirlo: Was the only saving grace for Italy in the match. Even though was not as influencing as his counterpart Xavi, but then still was good. Always wanted the ball, player some great passes. He would have been to influence more had Spain gave him time and space.

Flops:

Mario Balotelli: Worked hard but could never create that much needed opening for his team. Was never able to cut through by the Spanish defence and frustration saw him taking some wild shots from distance.

Andrea Barzagli: The biggest flop of the match, Barzagli would want to erase this match from his memory as soon as possible. Should have traced Spain for the second, third and fourth goal, but then could not. Made fatal mistakes in the match.
