From U-19 to the national team: Can Unmukt Chand follow the footsteps of his more illustrious seniors like Yuvraj & Virat?

India A team is struggling in their tour to West Indies and that has sent alarming signals to the national camps as they are the future of Indian team. The worrying part is that they are struggling against a team whose main side lost against Bangladesh in their home Test series.

Batsmen like Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane and others had a great chance to make a mark by putting up a solid performance, but all of them have failed. Batsmen from India A team have disappointed, but there is one batsman in the India U-19 side who has been impressive with every innings that he plays. Delhi-lad Unmukt Chand is considered to be a fine batsman and he is putting up more than a descent performance in the under-19 Asia Cup. He is leading the Indian side and has done a terrific job taking them in the finals. With the bat he is averaging 140 and that shows the influence he has had in the series.

Under-19 team over the times have always provided some fine players for India. Who can forget that we got Yuvraj Singh from the team along with Mohammed Kaif. Yuvraj has been a batting stalwart since then and Kaif also had a pretty good one day career.

India’s batting sensation Virat Kohli is also the product of India U-19 team and been a consistent performer since the time he was picked in the side.

It will be unfair to compare young Chand with Yuvraj or Kohli at this stage of his career, but he does look like a player who will give India A batsmen a run for their money in the near future. Chand, who played a couple of matches for Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League, impressed there as well with his short innings. He looks like a lad who has got time in his hands and handled himself pretty well in IPL.

Unlike the other young batsmen who are going around the circuit, he looks to play cricketing strokes and depends more on his technique and class than his power. He has made an impression ad if he continues to bat like he is batting at present, he is most certain to make an impression on our selectors.
